Journeys Within the Gut Microbiome

Why Do I Feel a Warm Glow Inside?

A Simple Question with a Living Answer

You sit still. You breathe. You let your attention drop into your body. And then it comes — a warmth, a glow, a quiet sense of satisfaction. Not a thought. Not a memory. A physical sensation. A presence.

It is not imagination. It is communication.

§ I — The Gut–Brain Axis

Your gut and your brain are in constant conversation. This is not a metaphor. It is a biological fact. The gut–brain axis is a two-way communication system. Your brain sends signals to your gut, and your gut sends signals back to your brain.

When your beneficial gut bacteria are active and thriving, they send signals up the vagus nerve. These signals travel from your gut to your brainstem to the reward centres of your brain. The result is dopamine release. A feeling of wellbeing. A sensation of satisfaction.

That warmth is not vague. It is measurable.

§ II — The Vagus Nerve & Reward

The vagus nerve is the main highway of the gut–brain connection. It is a bundle of thousands of nerve fibres that runs from your gut to your brain. When your gut bacteria are active, the vagus nerve carries those signals upward. They land in the brain's reward centres. They trigger dopamine.

The feeling is not a thought. It is a physiological response. The warmth you feel is the body saying yes to what is happening inside you.

§ III — The Heat of Activity

Your gut bacteria do not just send signals. They generate warmth. Bacterial metabolism produces heat. Research suggests that microbial heat generation in the gut may account for up to 70% of the total heat production of a person at rest.

When your gut bacteria are active and thriving, they are not just digesting. They are generating warmth. The warmth you feel is the physical evidence of a living system at work. The glow is the heat of life.

§ IV — The Food–Microbiome Connection

The warmth does not come from nothing. It is fed by what you eat.

Cooked & cooled vegetables

Cooked and cooled vegetables provide resistant starch. Resistant starch feeds beneficial gut bacteria. Polyphenol-rich olive oil nourishes the gut lining. Sea salt provides the minerals needed for cellular function.

When you eat with intention, you are not just nourishing yourself. You are feeding the network inside you. The bacteria multiply. The signals strengthen. The warmth deepens.

§ V — The Meditation Connection

When you sit in stillness and bring attention to your body, you are not just observing. You are tuning. The vagus nerve responds to attention. The gut–brain axis responds to presence. The nervous system responds to stillness.

The warmth is not a reward for meditating. It is the natural response of a system that is being listened to. The glow is the body saying: I am here. I am alive. I am working.

§ VI — The Mycelial Pattern

The same pattern appears in the soil. The mycelial network connects trees, feeds plants, and sustains entire ecosystems. The network beneath the earth is not visible, but it is alive. When conditions are right, it glows.

You are part of that same network. Your gut is a mycelium. Your microbiome is a living web. The warmth is the proof.

§ VII — So Why Do You Feel a Warm Glow Inside?

Because the network is alive. Because the connection is real. Because the food you eat and the stillness you hold are feeding something ancient and vital.

It is not imagination. It is communication. It is the body recognising itself. It is the mycelium acknowledging the thread.

The warmth is not a mystery. It is the language of the body. You are learning to speak it. The becoming continues.
